Discover the creative fun of brass rubbing at Conwy Visitor Centre! Medieval brasses were originally created to commemorate significant individuals, such as knights, nobles, and clergy, and were often found in churches as elaborate markers of burial sites. These engraved brass plates showcased intricate designs, celebrating the lives and status of those they honoured. Over time, these brasses became treasured artefacts, offering a glimpse into the artistry and heritage of the medieval period. By the Victorian era, brass rubbing emerged as a fashionable way for church visitors to take home a keepsake of their experience. With paper and a wax crayon, visitors would trace the intricate designs directly from the brass monuments. However, this growing trend began to cause wear and damage to the original monuments. To preserve these historical treasures, replica brasses were created, allowing people to continue this creative tradition without harming the originals. At Conwy Visitor Centre, you can try your hand at this beloved activity with our collection of over 100 replica brasses. Choose from a variety of captivating designs, including Conwy Castle, Henry VIII, knights in armour, elegant ladies, and iconic figures such as William Shakespeare. Once you've made your selection, our friendly team will provide everything you need: specialist paper, a choice of metallic waxes, and helpful guidance to get started. Then, it’s your turn to get creative and craft your very own masterpiece to take home the same day! Brass rubbing is a delightful activity for all ages, blending history, art, and fun into an unforgettable experience Please note: brass rubbing sessions take place upstairs at Conwy Visitor Centre. This a listed historic building which has no lift so there is currently no wheelchair access. If you would like to take part in the brass rubbing experience but would find climbing the stairs an obstacle please contact me and I will try to find a solution. For £12 per person you can choose a standard size brass (approx. 42 x 24 cm) from our extensive selection, then spend up to an hour creating your own memento to take home. If you finish within the hour and would like to take another rubbing your second work of art will cost just £8.
